S. Florida wins Big East tourney opener (AP)

Dominique Jones had 20 points and nine rebounds, and South Florida beat DePaul 58-49 in the Big East tournament opener Tuesday for its fourth straight victory. Mike Mercer added 14 points for the ninth-seeded Bulls (20-11), who hope a strong showing this week could propel them into an NCAA tournament field already sure to be flush with Big East regulars.

Final Four to be seen in 3-D in theaters (AP)

The Final Four will be shown in 3-D in movie theaters around the country. CBS announced Tuesday that the men’s basketball national semifinals April 3 and the championship game two days later will be broadcast in 3-D in up to 100 theaters. TV networks have been experimenting with airing sports events in 3-D in theaters, and ESPN is planning to launch an entire 3-D channel.

Lee let go as Louisiana-Lafayette coach (AP)

Louisiana-Lafayette is looking for a new coach. The university says it will not renew the expiring contract of Ragin’ Cajuns coach Robert Lee. The Cajuns had an overall record of 13-16 this season, losing to Louisiana-Monroe in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. Lee has been with Louisiana-Lafayette for 14 years, including the last six years as head coach.

FDU removes interim tag from Vetrone (AP)

Fairleigh Dickinson removed the interim tag from Greg Vetrone and promoted him to head men’s basketball coach. The school announced the move Tuesday. Vetrone was an assistant coach under Tom Green in 2008-09. He was named interim coach when Green was fired last June after 26 years at FDU. Vetrone guided the Knights to an 11-21 record this season, but the Knights started off 0-10.

Swarbrick: Irish could lose independence (AP)

Pinstripe Bowl set for Yankee Stadium (AP)

The first Pinstripe Bowl will be played at Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30 and will be televised by ESPN. The game will include the No. 3 team in the Big East and the No. 6 school in the Big 12, excluding Bowl Championship Series participants. “I think no matter what the sport, every kid who grows up wants to play at Yankee Stadium,” Yankees president Randy Levine said Tuesday.
